Providers for OB/GYN & Family Practice w/Obstetrics
Obstetricians and family practice doctors can offer prenatal and birth care. An obstetrician (OB/GYN)is a physician with specialties in surgery and pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. A woman with a high-risk pregnancy will require the services of an obstetrician. An obstetrician should respect the process of birth, while providing the care required for a high-risk situation. Family practice doctors take lower-risk obstetrical patients and may use fewer interventions than an obstetrician. Interview questions for doctors providing obstetrical care include asking about rates of intervention (epidurals, inductions, cesareans) as well as rate of unmedicated births, vaginal births, and VBACs. Many doctors promote interventions that can lead to complications in both normal and higher-risk labors, while others practice more of a midwifery model of care.
